Hup Hupfeldt and Brendan McGrath each scored three goals while Matt Walters and Gavin McBride had two apiece today as host Haverford School defeated Loyola Blakefield (Md.), 11-6, in a non-conference boys’ lacrosse game.
The Fords, ranked No. 1 in two national polls as well as in Pennsylvania, improved to 2-0. The Dons, who fell to another Inter-Ac League team, Penn Charter, on Friday, fell to 0-2.
Sam Rohr added a goal for the Fords, while Will McNamara and Carl Walrath each had two assists. Joe McCallion won 8 of 12 face-offs and Will Gural took 3 of 5. Goalie Conor Kelly had 9 saves.
Haverford School is now 2-0 against MIAA teams, having defeated host St. Paul’s, 10-9, on Friday. This Saturday the Fords head back down to the Baltimore area to face McDonogh School.
“We knew that both [St. Paul’s and Loyola] were going to be good,” said senior McCallion, who has committed to Penn. “They’re both MIAA teams, and the MIAA is really good.
“But we’re just taking one game at a time. We’ve got another big one on Saturday against McDonogh, so that’s the next big thing and we have to focus on stepping it up for that and making sure we play our best.”
McBride, a sophomore, admitted that the Fords have been sloppy at times and need to cut down on turnovers.
“The offense needs to focus on cleaning some stuff up, specifically stick skills,” he said. “We had a lot of turnovers today. But mostly we just need to work on tying up some loose ends and making sure we’re ready to play our best.”
