Boys’ lacrosse: Haverford School defeats Germantown Academy, 9-3; gears for Saturday’s No. 1-vs.-No. 2 showdown

Hup Hupfeldt had three goals and four assists while Brendan McGrath and Zach Rego each scored twice as visiting Haverford School defeated Germantown Academy, 9-3, today in a key Inter-Ac League game.

The Fords, ranked No. 1 in every national poll, improved to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in the Inter-Ac. Germantown Academy, ranked No. 3 in the state, No. 22 by ESPN RISE and No. 23 by under Armour/Inside Lacrosse, fell to 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Haverford School took a 5-1 first-period lead and stretched the advantage to 9-1 after three periods. Matt Walters added a goal and an assist and Joe McCallion also had a goal and an assist and won seven of nine face-offs. Conor Kelly made eight saves and yielded just one goal in three periods.

The Patriots got two goals from George Robinson and eight saves from goalie Jake Adoni.

The win assures that Haverford School will remain No. 1 when it plays Conestoga Saturday at the 11th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor. Conestoga, ranked No. 2 in every poll, defeated Radnor, 11-3, today to remain undefeated at 11-0.

“The offense played really well [today] in the first half, but kind of let off a bit in the second,” said Walters. “We got up big early so were able to get some younger guys in at the end, which was great.

“Going into Saturday, we know it’s a huge game. We’re really excited. We’ve already played a team (Darien, Conn) ranked No. 2 before and now we have to play another team that’s ranked No. 2 in the country, which is awesome.

“I think we just have to stay focused on and off the field, go to our classes, work together and have some great practices.”
