Boys’ lacrosse: Haverford School clinches outright Inter-Ac League championship with 13-9 win over EA

Visiting Haverford School clinched an outright Inter-Ac League championship Saturday night as it defeated Episcopal Academy, 13-9.

The Fords improved to 18-0 overall and 7-0 in the Inter-Ac. Actually, Haverford had clinched the crown hours earlier when second-place Germantown Academy fell to to Malvern Prep, 8-7.

Brent Tomlinson scored the go-ahead goal in the final period and gave his team a 9-8 lead after EA’s Shane Morrell had tied it, 8-8, late in the third period.

Grove Stewart led Haverford School with three goals and two assists while Zach Rego (one assist) and Gavin McBride each scored twice. Hup Hupfeldt had a goal and two assists and Brendan McGrath had a goal and an assist while Joe McCallion scored once and won 15 of 25 face-offs.

“You could tell that everyone on the sideline and on the field wanted in some way to help win this game, and it was just a matter of time before someone had the opportunity to step up,” said Tomlinson. “Luckily I got the opportunity.”

Haverford School can finish undefeated in the Inter-Ac by defeating Penn Charter on Tuesday. The Fords are expected to be the top seed in the upcoming Inter-Ac Invitational.

Connor Haab and Tyler Odell led EA with two goals and an assist each while Sam Lawlor had a goal and two assists and Tyler Morrell made 13 saves.
