Boys’ club roundup: HEADstrong Blue wins Elite H.S. Division championship at Rutgers MVP Tournament

Team HEADstrong Blue, comprised entirely of rising juniors throughout the Greater Philadelphia area, won the Elite High School Division of the Rutgers MVP Tournament on Thursday.

HEADstrong Blue rallied past Cincinnati Elite, 4-3, in the championship game on goals by Steve Onorato (Hershey), Derek Stump (Exeter High) and Dillan Buettner (Great Valley). HEADstrong downed the NJ Thunder, 7-4, in the semifinals.

HEADstrong Blue used relentless defense and timely scoring sweep through pool play with a perfect 5-0 record, highlighted by a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Minnesota Jaxx-Frost when Joe Dunn (Malvern Prep) scored on a feed from Travis Chou (Haverford School) for the overtime win.

The HEADstrong Blue attack featured Chou, Dunn, Kelton Heverly (Ridley), Eric Berkelback (St. Augustine), and Tyler MacDougall (Souderton).

The midfield was comprised of stellar play from Buettner, Stump, Onorato, Noah Joseph (Great Valley), Dalton George (Ridley), Tony Fisher (Lower Merion), Quinn Hager (Episcopal), and defensive midfielders Mike Crowley (Ridley) and Alex Dipasquale (Parkland).

The defense was led by Nick Eufrasio (Ridley), Jared Horoski (Malvern Prep, Dan Smyth (Springfield-Delco), Harry Rosenberg (Haverford School), Matt Robinson (Episcopal Academy), Max Ajemian (Downingtown West) and Stephen Satterthwaite (Malvern Prep). HEADstrong received strong goalie play from Tommy McDermott (Ridley) and Ryan Kelly (Central Bucks South) who split duties in the net.

HEADstrong Blue will conclude their summer season next weekend at the Long Island Classic.
