The Duke’s Lacrosse Club went 5-0 last weekend at the University of Virginia Annual Summer Team Camp.
The Duke’s squad was a mix and match of Duke’s and Duke’s Lite players, including rising freshmen up to and including two Dukes rising seniors.
Duke’s defeated, among others, St. Anne’s Belfield (Va.), Cal Nor-West, and a Minnesota Select Team from the Lakes region.
Aside from the games, the UVA Coaches conducted a Unique Film Session with the team to review individual players and game schemes in a similar fashion to how they review their own national champs.
Highlights for the Dukes were:
*The face-off prowess of Mark ” Little Beast” Gurenlian (rising junior/Springfield-Delco), and Charles Kelly (rising freshman/Malvern Prep);
*Strong goalkeeping from Brian Zappala (rising sophomore/Episcopal Academy) and Ryan Kern (rising freshman/Appoquinimink HS, Del.);
*Strong midfield play from MVP Ryan Hibbs (rising senior, Downingtown West) Jeff Cimbalista (rising junior/New Hope Solebury), Chris Daly (rising junior/Lower Merion), Sean Brown (rising senior/The Hill School), Chase Young (rising sophomore/St. Joseph’s Prep), and Drew Schantz (rising freshman/Parkland);
*Offensive MVP Paul Major (rising junior/Spring-Ford) led the attack;
*Solid defense from Sean Dougherty (rising junior /The Hill School), Ian Hare (rising junior/Spring-Ford), Andrew Benedict (rising sophomore/St. Joseph’s Prep), and Ron Keehfus (rising freshman/Penn Charter).
