Casey Powell had five goals and two assists, Josh Sanderson added two goals and four assists and Dan Dawson dished eight assists as the Boston Blazers held the Philadelphia Wings to two second-half goals and claimed a 10-6 National Lacrosse League victory tonight before 7,940 at the Wells Fargo Center.
The loss spoiled the Wings’ 25th anniversary celebration as they opened their season in hopes of improving on a disappointing 5-11 campaign in 2010.
To commemoratea quarter century of lacrosse, the Wings brought in a host of alumni and introduced them to the small, but enthusiastic crowd. The game was tied, 4-4 until late in the first half when Powell put his team ahead for good on a power play goal.
Powell and Kevin Buchanan scored third-period goals to make it 7-4 before Athan Iannucci cut the deficit to 7-5 early in the final period. But the Blazers salted it by scoring 44 seconds later on a power play goal by Powell and notching two more to make it 10-5.
Alex Turner led the Wings with two goals and one assist while Bill McGlone (Ridley) scored twice. Drew Westervelt and Iannucci each had a goal and two assists while Pay Heim (Conestoga) and Ryan Boyle each added two assists.
Boston outshot Philadelphia, 68-43, as Wings goalie Brendon Miller made 39 saves. Anthony Cosmo made 23 saves for the Blazers.
