Recent Abington graduate Emily Towey (goalie) has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at the University of Scranton.

Abington's Emily Towey has committed to play at Scranton

Towey was a Second Team All-Suburban One National Conference pick in 2010 and 2011 and this year she also was named a US Lacrosse Academic All-American. In 2010, she played in the National Tournament, and she played club lacrosse for 380.

Towey, an Honor Roll student, intends to either major in Math, or double major in Secondary Education and Math.

Towey considered all options when choosing a school, looking at Division I, II and III schools.

“I don’t want lacrosse to be my whole life in college, said Towey. “I want to focus on school, and there’s also the social aspect. With Division III, there was a better balance of those three things.

“The first time I visited, I took the tour and really liked it,” said Towey of Scranton. “It had a really good vibe, and when I met the coach (Becky Davis) she seemed like a coach I could definitely get along with.”

This past season, Abington finished second in the National Conference, with a league record of 6-2 (11-7 overall). Abington fell in the first round of the District 1 tournament to Council Rock North. Towey, who served as a co-captain, said the seniors accepted the role of leading a young team under first-year coach Chris Aquilino.

“We were basically going through a whole new program,” Towey said. “We had a very young team, and I felt like it was our job to step it up, make an impact and say that Abington lacrosse is still there. I felt like we still had to make a statement, and we somewhat did.”
