District 1 boys’ lacrosse: Avon Grove, Ridley advance to fifth-place game and shot at state berth

Damian Sobieski had three goals and one assist, Trevor Hornby added two goals and three assists and Anthony DiNenno contributed two goals and an assist while dominating at the face-off X to help host Avon grove defeat Abington, 12-10, today in the District 1 boys’ lacrosse playbacks.

The fifth-seeded Red Devils (18-3) advance to the fifth-place game and a shot at a PIAA berth Thursday against Ridley – which defeated Spring-Ford, 15-7 – at Lower Merion at 4 p.m.

Abington has been eliminated from the playoffs and finishes at 15-7.

Avon Grove outscored Abington, 7-2, in the second period and never relinquished its 8-4 halftime lead.

Matt Figueroa led the Ghosts with five goals and Nick Pisko scored three.

Ridley 15, Spring-Ford 7

The host Green Raiders (18-4) advanced to the fifth-place game and eliminated the Rams (20-4) as seven players scored two or more goals. Eric Streicher led the attack with three goals and three assists while Kyle Bush (two assists), Kevin Garling (two assists), Ryan O’Kane (two assists), Jim Gormley (one assist), Dalton George and Kelton Heverly each had two goals.

Paul Major led Spring-Ford with three goals and an assists and Brian Bock had three goals.
