Last year Lower Merion attackman Jordan Wolf and Springfield-Delco goalie Austin Kaut were named co-winners of the Phillylacrosse.com Players of the Year honor.
This year they finished 2-3 in the final Insidelacrosse.com rankings as the top freshmen for men’s lacrosse in 2011.
The No. 1 freshman was North Carolina attackman Nicky Galasso, who had 24 goals and 32 assists for the Tar Heels.
Wolf, who was all-Atlantic Coast Conference, has 30 goals and 20 assists and has led the Blue Devils to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Duke will face Notre Dame Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Foxborough, Mass.
Kaut was the major reason Penn State (8-6) was perhaps the most improved team in the country. Kaut had a save percentage of 63.5%, and a goals against average of 7.90. He helped lead the Nittany Lions to the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament where they fell to UMass, 10-9. Kaut was named CAA Rookie of the Year and was an all-league choice.
Also from Philly, Penn State attackman Shane Sturgis (Downingtown East) was No. 14. Sturgis led the Lions in scoring with 18 goals and 16 assists and was named all-rookie in the CAA.
