Julius Mouser had five goals and two assists and reserve goalie Chris Gaulin made 16 saves to lead Shipley School to a stunning 9-7 victory over host Episcopal Academy today in the first round of the Inter-Ac Invitational boys’ lacrosse tournament.

The 10th-seeded Gators, who won the regular season title in the Friends Schools League, improved to 14-2. They will play at second-seeded Malvern Prep in the Inter-Ac Invitational quarterfinals Wednesday (4:30 p.m.).

Shipley, the two-time defending champions of the Friends Schools League, also begin league playoffs Tuesday when they host Westtown in the semifinals (4 p.m.).

“This is the biggest win on the biggest stage for our program in my 10 years here at Shipley,” said coach Mark Duncan. “Coming in today, we had nothing to lose.”

Mouser, who is signed with Rutgers, also contributed at the face-off X because EA’s Jonathan Garino was winning nearly all the draws.

“Being able to upset a lacrosse powerhouse like EA is a huge deal,” Mouser said. “I was able to exploit EA’s defense through my speed. We weren’t doing well at the face-off X so coach told me to wait for Garino to make his move and then use my speed to get the groundball.”

Mike Litner added two goals and two assists for Shipley while Mac Gallagher and Andrew Wofford scored once each. Gaulin came off bench eight seconds into the game when starting goalie Ian McGibbon was injured on the first shot and was consistent throughout the contest.

The Shipley defense also got key efforts from Eric Lloreaux, Steve Gentry , Will Todd, Mike Gagnier, Gore Kamara, Jamie Piltch, Luke Massengill and Evan Romano, according to coach Mark Duncan.

This was the first time Shipley has ever defeated Episcopal Academy, a member of the powerful Inter-Ac League that boasts wins this year over nationally-ranked La Salle and Germantown Academy as well as District 1 powers Radnor and Downingtown East.

Tyler Odell led seventh-seeded EA (6-12) with three goals and Ian Strain had a goal and two assists while Garino and Shane Morrell each had a goal and an assist. Tyler Morrell made six saves.
