Eric Waibel and Damian Sobieski each scored four goals as host Avon Grove earned a key 11-7 victory over Spring-Ford today in a battle of Philly boys’ lacrosse unbeatens.

The Devils, coming off an emotional, 9-8, overtime thriller over Great Valley Thursday in the Ches-Mont League, improved to 4-0. The Rams fell to 3-1.

The Devils raced to an 8-2 halftime lead before Spring-Ford recovered and drew within 8-6 in the third period. Trevor Hornby added a goal and two assists and Anthony DiNenno had a goal and won 14 of 19 face-offs for Avon Grove. Colin Peck scored once and Tommy Malone made eight saves in goal.

For the Rams, Brian Bock and Drew Thomas each scored twice – for Thomas it gave him 101 career goals. Jared Novia was brilliant in the cage 18 saves.

The win was particularly sweet for Avon Grove coach Eric Jackson, who remains close friends with Rams coach Kevin Donnelly, his old college roommate at West Chester
University.

“We’re playing really well as a team right now,” said Jackson, whose team lost last year to Donnelly’s Rams, 12-11. “We have our whole defense back and they are tough to get by. We have some great athletes back there and Anthony is winning the face-offs so we can dictate the tempo of the game.

“The offense is playing well as a team. That’s our motto – team-first, and the kids are believing in it.”

Spring-Ford had won each of its previous three games by at least 12 goals and had to take a step up in competition.

“We certainly came out slow and we were not ready for their speed,” Donnell said. “We had a couple easy games in a row and they took it to us. We didn’t come out as hard as we needed to.”
