The Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team defeated La Salle, 7-6, in it’s Atlantic 10 opener on Friday afternoon at Finnesey Field.
Three players scored two goals apiece to lead the Hawks, including Alana Glanell, who scored the game-winning goal and tallied two assists in the win.
La Salle opened scoring with four goals in the first 9:21, including three man-up goals, but the Hawks answered back with four goals of their own to knot the game, 4-4, going into the break.
Glanell tallied the first goal off a pass from Jen Peters (two goals) at the 16:37 mark and just 1:03 later Meghan McDevitt set up freshman Val Paolucci (Springfield-Delco) for her first goal of the game. Grace Dinn and Peters each scored in the last four minutes of the half.
In the second half, Paolucci drilled a ball into the back of the net to give the Hawks the lead, but La Salle answered with two goals to go up by one, 6-5, with 20:59 to go. Peters scored a free-position goal to tie the game at 18:35 and Glanell converted the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt with 9:02 on the clock.
The Hawks maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the remaining minutes and held the Explorers off on defense for the win.
La Salle (4-6, 0-1) was led by Nora McGurkin (Penn Charter), who had two goals and an assist. Lauren McDermott (North Penn) and Jackie Roebuck (Marple Newtown) each had a goal and an assist.
SJU outshot La Salle, 27-17, while the Hawks’ defense caused nine of the Explorers 18 turnovers in the game and goalkeeper Kaitlin LaBarbera made seven saves in net.
Saint Joseph’s (5-5, 1-0) returns to action when it hosts Temple on Sunday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.
