A number of debatable issues have been raised in connection with the trial of Gerald Ung, who last Tuesday was found not guilty in the shooting of former lacrosse standout Eddie DiDonato 13 months ago in Old City.
As judged by the number of bloggers and intense traffic to the stories of the trial over the six-day period of the trial, and past accounts of DiDonato’s remarkable recovery, it is obvious that the story has been on the minds of Philly lacrosse fans – and those from well beyond our typical readership.
Some have questioned us about covering PA Commonwealth V Ung, saying day-to-day stories of a trial involving a shooting doesn’t belong on the pages of Phillylacrosse.com.
We beg to differ.
Lacrosse is the glue that binds many of us together. However, we are more than just the game, we are a community. Phillylacrosse.com mission is to share stories that affect the players, and members of our community some may be tragic, some uplifting and some about who lost and who won it is our hope that with your support we will continue to do just that.
We at Phillylacrosse stand by our coverage of this tragic event and wish for DiDonato’s continued healing and a full and happy future. What DiDonato has shown all of us since the shooting is strength of character, willingness to overcome and the true survival spirit.
Everything is possible with family and friends at your side and a willingness to work for what you want. These lessons should serve as reminders to all of us and are valuable lessons both on and off the lacrosse field.
We also feel for Mr. Ung and the personal struggles that will surely stem from this unfortunate chain of events. It is our hope that both these young men take this tragic incident and use it to create positive traction in their lives and community.
