Moorestown junior Alex Martinelli has committed to Delaware

Moorestown (N.J.) junior midfielder Alex Martinelli has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Delaware.

Martinelli scored 25 goals and was named All-Burlington County last year for the Quakers, who went 10-8. He plays club lacrosse for Tri-State.

Martinelli hopes to major in Engineering at Delaware.

“I went down and I really liked the coaches,” he said. “It’s a great campus at Newark and it has awesome facilities. It was a perfect fit for me.”

Delaware won the Colonial Athletic Association championship last year under veteran coach Bob Shillinglaw.

Martinelli is one of seven juniors that have already committed to Delaware. One is a fellow New Jersey native, Parrish Young, who plays at Gunnery School (Conn.).

“The program is really looking strong,” said Martinelli. ‘They had an excellent year last season.”

Martinelli is one of many Moorestown players that have committed to play college lacrosse, including LB3 club player Kyle Engel (attackman/Washington and Lee). Martinelli believes the Quakers will be a force in New Jersey for 2011.

“We have most of our players back,” Martinelli said. “The defense is returning and most of our midfield is back, so that’s another strong area. We have big expectations for this year.”

These other juniors have committed to Delaware:

Andy Dines, Westminster School (CT), attackman, Delaware
Tyler Mardian, Collegiate School (Va.), face-off specialist, Delaware
Will Ryan, Avon Old Farms (Conn.), goalie, Delaware
Paul Urbank, Chaminade (N.Y.), midfielder, Delaware
Parrish Young, Gunnery School (Conn.), midfielder, Delaware
