The Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) today signed left-handed forward Bill McGlone (Ridley) to a two year contact extension.
McGlone enters into his sixth season with the NLL and second with the Wings. The 6-2, 210-pound offensive forward ended the 2010 season with 35 points (19 G, 16 A) and tallied 61 loose balls.
“It is an honor and dream to play for the Philadelphia Wings in my hometown,” said McGlone. “The fans make Philly the best place to play in the NLL and it is my goal to bring the excitement and, more importantly, the tradition of wining, back to them for our anniversary season.”
“We are thrilled that Billy will continue to be in a Wings uniform,” said Head Coach John Tucker. “[McGlone is] big, strong and athletic – he has a unique combination of size and skill that creates match-up problems for the opposition. Off the field he is a well-known and integral part of the Philadelphia lacrosse community.”
Wings Owner Mike French said “We are extremely pleased to have a player of Billy’s caliber, character, and leadership committed to the revitalization of the Philadelphia Wings.
“We went to great lengths to get McGlone back to Philly and he will be a critical component in supporting our grassroots efforts and growing the Wings footprint in the tri-state area lacrosse community.”
McGlone was drafted with the 3rd pick of the 4th round on the 2006 NLL Entry Draft by the Chicago Shamrox. McGlone earned All-Rookie team honors that year.
In March of 2007, McGlone played in front of his hometown crowd versus the Philadelphia Wings. In honor of high school teammate, Nick Colleluori, who died from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in November 2006, McGlone donated his game salary to the HEADstrong Foundation for Cancer Research. McGlone scored three goals and recorded one assist in the contest.
Shortly before the 2009 season began, the Shamrox suspended operations, and a dispersal draft was held. McGlone was selected third overall by the Toronto Rock. After one season with the Rock, McGlone was traded to the Philadelphia Wings along with Kevin Huntley for Peter Jacobs.
McGlone and the Wings will open their 25th anniversary season at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, January 8, when they host the Boston Blazers at 7 p.m.
