Villanova, led by all-league choices Brian Karalunas and Kevin Cunningham, was selected to finish fourth in the Big East Conference in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Coaches’ preseason poll.
Syracuse was voted in as No. 1, followed by 2010 NCAA runner-up Notre Dame and Georgetown.
Villanova landed long stick midfielder Karalunas (55 groundballs, 55 TO last year; two-time All-American) and attackman Cunningham (15 goals, 30 assists last year) on the preseason all-league team.
Notre Dame shoould receive contributions from several young Philly products. Freshman Westy Hopkins (La Salle/PG at Lawrenceville) impressed in the fall at both attack and midfield. Sophomore Tyler Andersen (Radnor) will see time at close defense and LSM.
Georgetown could get a boost from redshirt freshman Tyler Knarr (La Salle), who will provide depth at the face-off X and LSM.
Villanova’s defense features junior Chris Creighton (Malvern Prep). Also from Philly, sophomore attackman Paul Mita (Conestoga) has impressed and redshirt-junior midfielder Chris Aitken (Haverford School) looks to contribute after missing the 2010 season with an injury.
St. John’s, picked to finish fifth, features junior attackman Charlie Holenstein (Downingtown West) and sophomore Tyler Novotny (Spring-Ford) on attack. The midfield has sophomore Jarrett Carr (Hatboro-Horsham) and freshman Connor Mullen (Downingtown West) and freshman walk-on goalie Andrew Boyer (Owen J. Roberts) has impressed.
