Paul Webber scored four goals and host Villanova outscored Drexel, 7-2. in the middle periods as the Wildcats claimed a key 10-8 victory tonight in a non-league men’s lacrosse game involving two Philly powers.

The Wildcats (5-2) snapped the Dragons’ six-game win streak. Drexel (6-2) entered play ranked 11th in the country.

Drexel led, 2-1, late in the first period when Villanova took over. Mike Brennan tied the game, 2-2, late in the period and then Nick Doherty, Mark Scioscia and Webber scored consecutive goals to make it a 5-2 game.

Colin Ambler (Abington) scored his second goal of four late in the half, but the ‘Cats came out even stronger in the second half and tallied four of the period’s five goals – by Will Casertano, Rice, Weber and Michael Vigilante – to seize a comfortable 9-4 lead.

“It was a great win for our program to beat the No. 11 team in the country in addition to Drexel being a former CAA and Philadelphia rival,” said Villanova coach Michael Corrado. “Paul Webber’s four goals were huge – he really stepped up and scored at crucial times in the game for us.”

Defensively, junior Brian Karalunas led the Wildcats with five caused turnovers and six ground balls while junior T.J. O’Donnell, senior Bryan McCartney (Archbishop Wood) and junior Chris Ficke each contributed with two ground balls.

Villanova freshman goalkeeper Billy Hurley captured the second win of his career with tonight’s effort, making 11 saves in the victory. Drexel’s Mark Manos (Salesianum School, DE) tallied eight saves in the loss.

“Billy [Hurley] had another good game against another tough opponent. He had great saves and played really well for us,” said Corrado.

Villanova will next be in action on Monday when it travels to upstate New York to face Syracuse University in their on campus home in the Carrier Dome at 3 p.m.

Corrado states, “We’re really excited to begin the BIG EAST portion of our schedule and we’re ready to compete against our conference rivals.”
