US National Team downs Harvard, 17-12, in exhibition game

Max Seibald scored five goals while Paul Rabil added four as Team USA defeated Harvard, 17-12, Sunday in an exhibition before 1,223 fans at Harvard Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Dean Gibbons tallied four goals and assisted on two others, while Matt Hull added a hat trick for the Crimson. Harvard goalkeeper Harry Krieger made 17 saves, while Brian Dougherty (Episcopal Academy) and Kip Turner recorded seven stops apiece for Team USA.

Team USA was coached by Lehigh coach and retired USA captain Kevin Cassese, one day after he led his Mountain Hawks at the 4th annual Nick Colleluori Classic at Ridley.

Harvard and Team USA were tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter, as Gibbons found Jeff Cohen for a Crimson goal with only one second remaining on the clock. In the second, Gibbons netted two goals and Hull tallied a man-up score, as Harvard kept the game tied, 5-5, with two minutes left to play in the half. After Team USA pulled ahead, 7-5, Daniel DiMaria cut the Crimson deficit to 7-6 just before halftime.

Gibbons, Hull and Cohen each notched goals for Harvard in the third quarter, but Team USA scored four times to hold an 11-9 advantage entering the final 15 minutes of action. Sophomore attackman Peter Schwartz (La Salle) had one assist for Harvard.

The Crimson offense surged in the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Kevin Vaughan and Hull tallied back-to-back goals to tie the game, 11-1, with 13:26 remaining. Team USA netted the next six scores to take a commanding lead before Vaughan netted the game’s final goal with two seconds to play.

Team USA outshot Harvard, 53-42, and held the advantage in ground balls, 32-28. Andrew Parchman won 11-of-28 faceoffs for the Crimson, who controlled 13-of-31 faceoffs overall.

Harvard was 19-of-22 on clear attempts, while Team USA went 22-of-23. The Crimson was also 2-of-4 on extra-man opportunities. John Rose led Harvard with five ground balls on the day.
