Well over 500 of the top boys’ and girls’ lacrosse players from Philadelphia, the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond will be in the spotlight this weekend as action begins in the Philly Showcase, one of the fall’s top recruiting events.

The first face-off begins tonight with the pre-Showcase at Cabrini College (7 p.m.). Three round robin games will be held between two top Philly boys’ club teams, the Duke’s L.C. and Rebel Elite, and an Inter-Ac League All-Star squad.

On Saturday nearly 350 players from will compete in the second Philly Boys’ Lacrosse Showcase at Episcopal Academy. The morning features games on six fields as 16 teams play three times each. In the afternoon, the top players will be chosen to play in the Gait Fab Forty All-Star Games.

On Sunday, just over 200 athletes will compete in the inaugural Philly Girls’ Showcase. Morning games will be held on four fields and the Gait Fab Forty Games will be held in the afternoon with a similar schedule as the boys.

Phillylacrosse.com, one of the event sponsors, will select Gait Fab Forty Players of the Game.

Tournament director Andy Hayes said more than 100 college coaches from men’s programs will be attending tonight and Saturday, and an expected 30-to-50 coaches from women’s programs will attend on Sunday.

The events Saturday and Sunday are free to the public. Tonight’s pre-Showcase has a $5 admission fee; it will benefit popular Philly lacrosse supporter Dan Carr, who is fighting brain cancer.

Moorestown (N.J.) sophomore midfielder Margaret Nissen will be one of more than 500 players competing in the Philly Showcase this weekend

One of the girls playing Sunday will be sophomore midfielder Margaret Nissen, a member of the New Jersey dynasty at Moorestown High. Nissen played on the Quakers’ freshman team last year and is hoping to crack the varsity lineup this year.

Moorestown won 10 consecutive New Jersey state crowns and had an incredible 228-game win streak (in-state) snapped in the state finals last year by Shawnee, 7-6.

“My dad helped me with searching for different places to go to get looked at,” said Nissen. “I got an e-mail about the Philly Showcase. I thought it would be a good opportunity to have coaches from schools that I might be interested in for the future, look at me play.”

Nissen said she is seeking the best competition possible. She noted that Moorestown graduated 13 seniors and nine starters and that she’ll need to continue to improve to earn a spot on the team.

“I like to play a lot of competition and get a feel of who I’ll be playing against in college one day,” she said. “I am looking to meet new girls and gain experience.

“I think it’s good to go out where lots of girls from this area aren’t playing, and get seen by coaches.”
