Philadelphia advances to playoff round at adidas National Lacrosse Classic

Colin Joka, a rising senior at Plymouth Whitemarsh, scored four goals and was named to the All-Star team while helping Team Philly defeat Missouri, 9-5, Wednesday night and advance to the eight-team playoffs at the adidas National Lacrosse Championships at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds.

Philadelphia (3-1 in pool play) is seeded No. 7 after the first day in the 20-team tournament that features many of the top underclassmen in the country. Team Philly will meet No. 2 New Jersey (3-0-1) at 8 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

Joka, who has eight goals overall, is joined on the All-Star Tournament Team by teammate Steven Chapman, a rising senior midfielder from Washington Township, N.J. The All-Star Game will be held at 12:15.

In Wednesday’s win over Missouri, Kevin Gulyas (Allentown Central Catholic) and Christopher Vetter (Central Bucks East) added two goals each for Team Philly while Mike Leyden (Haverford High) scored once.

Team Philly is being coached by Josh Hanlon (Neshaminy). The event is being attended by more than 70 college coaches.

Central Pennsylvania (3-0-1) and Tennessee (2-1-1) played to an 8-8 tie. Central PA, which features several more Philly players, is seeded No. 3 for the playoffs and will face Maryland Prep (3-1) at 9 a.m. The other semifinals matchups include No. 1 New England (4-0) vs. No. 8 Florida (2-2) and No. 4 Washington, D.C. (3-1) vs. No. 5 Maryland Public (3-1).
