The Hofstra women’s lacrosse team is gearing up for the second annual Nick Colleluori Women’s Lacrosse Classic, which the Pride will host on Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY.

The 14-team tournament will be the fan’s first chance this academic year to see the 2010-11 Pride in action. Hofstra – coached by Great Valley graduate Abby Morgan – had a strong 2010 campaign as the Pride advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship Game, won 12 games and finished the season ranked 15th in the nation.

There will be a multitude of activities available to people of all ages at the tournament including: raffles, fastest shot competition, face painting and a Hofstra student half-field shot competition as well. In addition, the HEADstrong Foundation will be on site to talk about its cause and will be selling merchandise to support HEADstrong.

The 29-game schedule will begin at 8:30 a.m. when Hofstra battles Vermont and New Hampshire takes on C.W. Post. The final game of the extravaganza will see Hofstra take on Temple at 5 p.m. Temple is joined by La Salle as the lone Philly teams playing in the event.

The highlight of the game schedule will be the 1:40 p.m. game between Hofstra and New Hampshire which will take place on the James M. Shuart Stadium turf. The game, which will be webcasted on, will follow a speech from Cheryl Colleluori at 1:25 p.m.

In addition to a great day of lacrosse, there will also be a variety of items associated with the HEADstrong Foundation for sale, including the lime green laces. All funds raised during the tournament will go directly to the HEADstrong Foundation.

Nick Colleluori died after a lengthy fight with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2006. He was a member of the Pride Lacrosse team from 2004 to 2006 and graduated from Ridley in 2004.

The HEADstrong Foundation’s mission is to generate funds for cancer research, distribute grants and assistance to survivors of blood cancer, provide financial assistance to families that are experiencing the hardships of having a sick family member, and provide scholarships and grants for students with ambitions of entering the medical field.
