Officials have released the schedule for the Third Annual ‘Checking for Cancer’ Lacrosse Invitational, slated for Saturday, April 16 at Haverford School.
The event, featuring 12 of the top boys’ teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region, raises funds for cancer research and awareness for the three primary male related cancers; Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular.
The field features five teams from Philadelphia – including the defending state champion (Conestoga) and host Haverford School, each expected to be ranked among the top teams in the nation in 2011.
The event was created by Haverford School coach John Nostrant and Georgetown Prep coach Kevin Giblin, two college teammates from Washington College and long-time friends who were diagnosed with cancer within months of each other less than three years ago and continue to recover. Nostrant is in remission from prostate cancer and Giblin has dealt with colon cancer.
Nostrant’s Fords – who already have 15 players committed or signed with Division I colleges – will meet Darien (CT) while Giblin’s Hoyas will face Delbarton (NJ). Conestoga – which has 10 players signed or committed to Division I colleges – meets Fairfield Prep (CT).
Other matchups include La Salle – which has won two the last three PA state titles and finished runner-up last year – vs. Wilton (CT) Philly’s Radnor (Central League) vs. six-time defending Ches-Mont League champion Downingtown East and Chatham (NJ) vs. Grerenwich (CT).
In last year’s final Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse rankings, Conestoga (No. 6), Haverford School (No. 11) and La Salle (No. 16) were ranked.
Games will be played on two turf fields.
