Kyle Garzia has resigned as head boys’ lacrosse coach at Sun Valley and accepted a job as an assistant coach at Division III power Cabrini College.

Garzia, a 2000 Sun Valley graduate, returned to his alma mater to serve as an assistant for two years before taking the head coaching job in 2005. In his last year three years, Garzia guided the Vanguards to 28-26 record, turning around a program that struggled midway through the decade.

Garzia, who helped start the school’s program in 1988 while an underclassmen, also led Sun Valley to a berth in the first District 1 tournament in 2009.

“I’ve enjoyed coaching at Sun Valley,” Garzia said. “It was great coaching at my high school, but I am always looking to progress in my coaching career and Cabrini is a win-win situation.”

Cabrini has won 10 straight Colonial State Athletic Conference championships and is perennially ranked in the Top 20 of Division III. Garzia also had built a strong rapport with Cabrini coach Steve Colfer.

“I had been in contact with coach Colfer,” said Garzia, who also coached under Dave Waldman for one year at Strath Haven (2004) and credits Waldman and former Sun Valley coach Chris Bell as his mentors. “What he does is phenomenal.

“We have similar coaching styles, in the way we see the game. It’s very exciting to be able to coach with him and his staff. They have a real powerhouse and it will be fun to be involved with a staff like that.”
