Mike Montella scored four goals and Rickey Lehman had a goal and five assists as Garnet Valley defeated Central Bucks East, 11-8, today in the District 1 quarterfinals at Henderson High.

The fifth-seeded Jaguars (16-4) advance to the semifinals Tuesday (8 p.m.) against top-seeded Springfield-Delco at Ridley High. Springfield topped Hatboro-Horsham, 7-6.

Fourth-seeded CB East (15-3) plays a losers’ bracket game against fellow Suburban One Continental Conference co-champion Hatboro-Horsham at Plymouth Whitemarsh at 6 p.m.

The Jaguars tallied nine goals in the second half to open a 10-5 lead in the final period. Garnet Valley coach Frank Urso said his team employed a zone defense for the first time. Also, goalie Billy Nielson had a solid game with 12 saves.

“We practice a zone defense every day in practice and have never used it until today,” said Urso. “It confused them for a while. You can’t dodge against a zone.

“Billy Nielson also came up big in goal.”

Garnet Valley won 15 of 22 face-offs and scored six extra-man goals. Eric Warden added two goals and two assists and Steve Smyrl had two goals and one assist while Jules Raucci scored twice and Adam Mondel scooped eight groundballs.

Conor McSherry led CB East with three goals and one assist and Alex Fetterman scored three goals.
