Five Philly grads – Gregitis, Smith, Meehan, Saraceni, Sturm – highlight Scranton’s Class of 2014 recruits

Jim Rogalski, head men’s lacrosse coach at The University of Scranton, has announced that 11 freshmen will join the program for the upcoming 2011 season.

Five of the recruits are from Philly: John Gregitis and Fran Smith of St. Joseph’s Prep, Wes Meehan and Ryan Saraceni of La Salle, and Gus Sturm of Conestoga.

The Class of 2014 also includes Dan Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), Jake Hutchins (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Trevor Internoscia (Belle Mead, N.J./Williston-Northampton), Dave Lafaman (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery), Lukas Martin (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), and Matt Tibbitts (West Hartford, Conn./Conard).

“I have been impressed with the commitment that the members of this class have shown since they first stepped on campus,” says Rogalski, who takes over as head coach this season after spending the past six seasons on the coaching staff at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. “I look forward to great things from these young men both on and off of the field.”

Gregitis and Smith, each of whom played in the midfield in high school, were members of back-to-back Philadelphia Catholic League runner-up teams at St. Joseph Preparatory. Gregitis, who scored 19 goals his senior year, was a second-team all-Philadelphia Catholic League selection last spring. He also lettered in football, golf and soccer in high school.

Meehan, a midfielder, was a member of a La Salle High School lacrosse program that went 42-7 over the past four years, including four Philadelphia Catholic League titles and two state championships (2007, 2008). He also ran cross-country in high school.

Saraceni, a defenseman, was a teammate of Meehan’s at LaSalle. Saraceni was also a member of the football team that won three league championship and a state title in 2010. He earned first-team all-league, all-city, and all-state honors as a linebacker on the football team and was also an all-league performer in lacrosse as well as earning first honors academically all four years.

Sturm, an attacker, finished with 15 goals and five assists for 20 total points and was a member of Conestoga state championship team last spring.

Frankel, an attacker, was a member of Kinnelon High School’s New Jersey state and Morris County championship teams. He also lettered in cross-country.

Hutchins earned three letters in lacrosse at Ridgewood High School, where he was a member of a Bergen County (2008) and two Group III state championship teams (2008, 2009).

Internoscia, a goalkeeper, spent his first two years of high school at Montgomery High School (NJ) and his final two at The Williston-Northampton School (Mass.). At Williston-Northampton, he made 70 saves and posted a goals against average of 9.3 his senior year. He was also the recipient of Williston-Northampton’s sportsmanship award.

Lafaman, a defenseman, was a teammate of Internoscia at Montgomery High School, which posted a four-year overall record of 68-21 (.764), including a state title (2007), state runner-up finish (2008), three county championships (2007, 2008, 2009), and two conference crowns (2007, 2008). He also earned honorable mention and third-team all-county honors.

Martin, a midfielder, was a member of a Shawnee High School program that posted four consecutive winnings seasons: 17-2 in 2007, 18-2 in 2008, 18-4 in 2009, and 17-4 in 2010. In his senior year, he won 65 percent of his face-off attempts and finished with 125 ground balls, 15 goals and 10 assists to earn first-team all-conference honors.

He was also named second-team all-conference his sophomore year.

Tibbitts, a midfielder, finished with 20 goals and 20 assists his junior year as Conard High School posted an 11-8 record. He scored 14 goals and had 10 assists in five games before a knee injury sidelined him the rest of his senior year. He also earned academic honors all four years in high school. 2011 University of Scranton Men’s Lacrosse Freshmen Class.
