Former UNC standout Young (Henderson) named assistant coach for Monmouth women

From Press Releases

Former University of North Carolina standout Brooke Young (Henderson) has been added to the Monmouth women’s lacrosse coaching staff, head coach Denise Wescott announced recently.

The West Chester native will be responsible for working with MU’s attack unit as well as recruit potential incoming student-athletes, set up official visits, coordinate tape exchange and Monmouth camps and clinics.

Young comes to West Long Branch from Franklin and Marshall College where she spent the last three seasons as the top assistant coach. In 2009, Young helped coach the NCAA Division III Champion Diplomats, while F&M were NCAA runners-up in 2008 and Final Four participants in 2010. The Diplomats compiled an astonishing 56-7 record while Young was an assistant coach.

“I am excited to have Brooke join our coaching staff, as well as having Ashley Waldman returning as an assistant,” said Wescott, who enters her second year at the helm of the Hawks. “I love her passion for the sport and know she enjoys working with student-athletes.

“She brings in lots of experience working with USTC in Downingtown planning field hockey and lacrosse events, running lacrosse clinics and camps, and coaching lacrosse at Franklin and Marshall the last three seasons. Having played at UNC she is aware of the commitment level a Division I player needs to make to work towards being ranked in the top 20 and going after a conference championship. I know she will work hard to help Monmouth lacrosse raise the bar and I know we will have some fun in the process.”

Young was a First Team All-America as a senior at Henderson in 2000 when she led the Warriors to the District 1 Class AAA championship game.

After graduation Young served as an assistant coach at Downingtown East. During that time she also was the women’s lacrosse director at the United Sports where she ran major lacrosse tournaments in addition to leagues and camps.

Young was a four-year attacker for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While a member of the nationally-ranked Tar Heels, Young captured the ACC title in 2002 en route to a NCAA Final Four appearance.

Young was also invited to try out for the U.S. National team that same season. She was also involved in the UNC student-athlete community where Young was a mentor in the Athletes Coming Together (ACT) program.
