Strath Haven senior defender Caroline Murphy has been named the United Sports female Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Murphy has a long list of accomplishments on her resume. She boasts a 4.0 GPA, takes all AP or Honors
courses, is a National Merit Scholar and a member of the National Honors Society. Last year Murphy received the Ann Barclay Hayes Award as the Outstanding Junior Girl at Strath Haven and was a Mock Trial State Finalist.
Murphy also was the recipient of the prestigious McCabe Scholarship. The McCabe Scholar selection committee places an emphasis on ability, character, personality, leadership, and service to school and community.
Murphy also spent community service hours teaching Spanish to elementary school students in Chester last year, served as a volunteer at a Vacation Bible School, and, through Student Council and Class Cabinet, fed the homeless and visted nursing homes.
This year Murphy has served as a captain for a team that is ranked No. 4 in the state and shared the Central League championship with Radnor and Springfield-Delco. The Panthers, seeded No. 4, play in the second round today at home against Abington today (4 p.m.).
Recently, Murphy named Second Team All-Central League and last year she was selected as a member of the Phillylacrosse.com Underclass Honor Roll.
For now, Murphy is focused on helping the Panthers challenge for the District 1 title.
“We have a lot to prove,” said Murphy. “We walk into every game and expect to win, it’s truly our motivation. (The fourth seed) is OK,;we like being the underdogs.”
