Women’s roundup: McKay (Pennridge) tally lifts Chestnut Hill College past Mercy, 14-13

A wrap-around goal by sophomore attack Kelly McKay (Pennridge) with 24 seconds to play lifted Chestnut Hill College to a 14-13 defeat over visiting Mercy College Friday for its first win of the season.

The Griffins were led by senior midfielder Carley Glass, who had four goals and two assists.

A game-saving stop by junior goalkeeper Cherise Bell (Cardinal Dougherty) provided McKay with the chance for her late heroics. Chestnut Hill (1-1) outscored Mercy College (3-2) 7-3 in the second half.

Bell made 15 saves and Glass added five ground balls, two draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Twin sister Maryanne Glass totaled three goals, an assist, three ground balls, a draw control, and two caused turnovers.

McKay contributed three goals while three Griffins recorded their first collegiate scores. Freshman midfielder Emily Goode recorded two goals, freshman attack Nicole Covella scored one, as did sophomore attack Michelle Wiater (Pennridge).

Mercy College was led by freshman goalkeeper Lauren Mateja (Upper Merion), who made 12 saves.

Division I

St. Bonaventure 11, UConn 10

Lauren Sparks (West Chester East) scored four goals and Jordan Christopher (Villa Maria Academy) added one for the Huskies (6-2) in their loss.

Monmouth 11, Mt. St. Mary’s 7

Molly O’Brien (Unionville) had three goals and an assist and Megan Brennan (Archbishop Carroll) scored twice while Perry DeWitt (Great Valley) added one goal for Monmouth (2-5).

Robert Morris 15, Long Island Univ. 8

Courtney Sicinski (Downingtown West) had four goals to pace Robert Morris (3-3) in its NEC opener. Christie Wienckowski (Marple Newtown) tallied a goal and an assist for LIU (1-6).

No. 7 Georgetown hosts No. 4 UNC today
Alert notice to avoid traffic problems

Several Philly players will be in the spotlight today when Georgetown hosts North Carolina at 1 p.m. in a key Division I battle.

No. 7 Georgetown (2-3) features starters Kelly Barnes (Radnor), Bunny O’Reilly (Springside School), Logan McCraw (Conestoga) and Mary Beth Brophy (Archbishop Carroll). The No. 4 Tar Heels feature starter Emly Garrity (Strath Haven).

The following traffic advisory was provided:
Alert! Saturday morning is the National Marathon which will go through the streets of Washington. This will close streets downtown and to the east from 7:00am until 12:00 noon.Georgetown will not be effected. People coming from the north on I95 would be advised to go west on 495 exiting at River rd to Clara Barton Pkwy which will take you directly to Georgetown. People coming from the south on I95 would be advised to exit unto GW Pkwy before crossing the river and take Key Bridge into Georgetown.

Please park in the South West parking garage located near the Multi Sport Field and McDonough Gym. Be sure to use the Canal Road entrance only. Do not use the Prospect entrance, you will be asked to turn around and will cause a delay.
