College roundup: Elliott (U. Darby) leads Widener women past Bryn Mawr

Senior Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby) scored four goals and sophomore Rachel Porter netted all three of hers in the first half when host Widener pulled away for a 15-4 win over Bryn Mawr in Division III women’s lacrosse.

Widener (2-2) opened a 10-3 halftime lead due in part to a 21-8 shots edge. The Pride also scored 11 straight goals bridging both halves for a 13-3 cushion midway through the second half. Elliott scored three goals in that run and Porter added two.

Senior Brittany Dippolito scored twice and dished two assists with freshman Sarah Hollywood adding five ground balls for the Pride. Sophomore Linda Salcedo (Archbishop Prendergast) made four saves in the opening half.

Hollywood, Mellany Broomall, Jen Harnden, Anna Geeter, Emily Shumaker and Stephanie McCoy (Cardinal O’Hara) also scored for Widener.

Gabby Marangell, Evan Schneider, Emily Levine and Mae Carlson all tallied for the Owls (0-2).

Cabrini 17, Immaculata 5

Amanda Alexandrowicz (Ridley) tallied four goals and Danielle Rothermel (St. Hubert) added three to pace the Cavaliers (2-1) in their league opener. Kacie O’Neill (Sun Valley) led Immaculata (0-4) with three goals and Brittany Worhtington (Methacton) made 16 stops.

College of New Jersey 22, Eastern 9

Grace Griffith tallied four goals and Kelly Dando three for the Eagles (0-3).

Franklin & Marshall 16, Babson 5

Meredith Lussier (Radnor) pumped in four goals for the No. 1 Diplomats (4-0).

Marywood 25, Neumann 7

Alex Bohen (Upper Merion) led Neumann (1-5) with five goals.

Wesley 15, Moravian 14

Alyssa Batty (Central Bucks West) made 26 saves in goal for Wesley (4-2). Jillian Pagliei (Council Rock North) and Allison Hess (Souderton) each had four goals and an assist for the losing Greyhounds (2-2).

Division I
Lehigh 14, Fairfield 13 (2 OT)

Freshman Meg Kelly scored the game-winner with 2:37 on the clock off an assist from Lauren Murray to move the Mountain Hawks to 6-0. Allison Thomas (Conestoga) and Kelly Draper scored three goals apiece for Lehigh, while Kelly and Anna Patterson added two apiece.

Colgate 9, George Mason 7

Emily Ellisen (Great Valley) scored once for George Mason (2-4).

Jacksonville 21, Long Island U. 10

Christie Wienckowski (Marple Newtown) had three goals and two assists for Long Island (1-5).

Loyola 18, Rutgers 6

Cara Filippelli (Archbishop Carroll) scored two goals for No. 17 Loyola (5-3) in its Big East opener. Mary Cryan (Radnor) scored once for Rutgers (5-2), 0-1).

Richmond 14, Longwood 12

Sam Tijirian (Springfield-Delco) scored once for Richmond (3-5).

Men
Division I
Rutgers 10, Marist 9

Matt Francis (North Penn) won 12 of 22 face-offs and scooped 10 groundballs for Marist (3-2).

UMass 17, Providence 3

Mike Wilus (North Penn) scored once for the winning Minutemen (4-2).

Virginia 18, Vermont 7

Defenseman Ken Clausen (Hill School) had three groundballs and two caused turnovers and John Haldy (Haverford Schol) dished two assists to help spark No. 1 Virginia (7-0).

Notre Dame 14, Denver 7

Defenseman Mike Creighton (Malvern Prep) had two groundballs to pace the Irish (4-2) defense in the win.

Division III

Dickinson 20, York 8

Matt Cherry (Radnor) collected three goals and two assists, Nike D3 Player of the Week Tyler Magann (Hill School) made seven saves, Pat Filippelli (Archbishop Carroll) had two groundballs and two caused turnovers and Chris Pianko (Central Bucks West) had a an assist and a groundball as the Red Devils improved to 7-0.

B.J. Blaker (Henderson) scored once for York (2-5).
