D3 women’s roundup: Moravian opens final season with easy vistory; Haverford College rolls

The Moravian College women’s lacrosse team – making its debut just weeks after learning its program will be dropped after the year – opened with an 18-7 non-conference win over Bryn Mawr College in the Tri-Co Invitational at Swarthmore College Saturday morning.

Jillian Pagliei (Council Rock North) led Moravian with four goals, which gave her 100 career points, the fourth player in school history to reach 100 career points. Senior midfielder Katie Wise (Abington) added three goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Maureen Helfers also had a hat trick for Moravian while Paige Warbick (Souderton) finished with two goals and an assist.

Sarah Carman (Pennridge) netted two goals. Gabby Marangell and Emily Levine led Bryn Mawr with two goals apiece while Miranda Gordon-Zigel, Caroline Heffernan and Zoe Rond-McPherson each scored once. Greyhound senior goalie Courtney Rosenberg made seven saves in the match while Bryn Mawr keeper Kate Fleming made 14 stops.

Haverford College 14, Widener 3

Josie Ferri (Pennsbury), Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds and Perrin Downing all scored three goals for Haverford (3-0) while Nora Proops added two. Alexa Pesce handed out two assists in the victory.

Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby) scored twice for Widener (1-2) and Calina Walz added another. Mellany Broomall handed out a pair of assists.

Swarthmore 21, Neumann 2

The Garnet(1-0) opened the 2010 season in dominating fashion, defeating Neumann in the second game of the Tri-Co Invitational.

Annalise Mowry (five goals), junior Amy Vachal (four) and Maddie Willaims (Kennett, three goals) led the scoring barrage. In the net, senior Allison Grein had nine saves.

Alex Bohen (Upper Merion) and Colleen Finnegan scored the Knights’ two goals.

Ursinus 14, Drew 11

Lindsay Urban (Central Bucks East) netted four goals and Elizabeth Cannon had three while Kim Peifer (Methacton), Emily Diehl and Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) each had two to lead the Bears (1-1).

Franklin & Marshall 16, Washington & Lee 8

Freshman Maggie Mae Shields (Baldwin School) had three goals, an assist and four draw controls while Meredith Lussier (Radnor) had two goals three assist and two draw controls to help the defending national champions claim its opener.

Scranton 17, Elmira 11

Deanna Giorno (Central Bucks South) scored three of her game-high five goals in the second half to lift Royals (1-1). Kristen Pickell (Wissahickon) and Katie Slade (Central Bucks East) each added two goals.
