Baldwin School junior midfielder Sloan Warren has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Virginia.

Warren was an Honorable Mention All-American last year when she scored 99 goals and helped the Bears tie for second place in the Inter-Ac League. Warren, who has been playing varsity since 7th grade and h

as nearly 250 career goals, also was a First Team All-Inter-Ac and Third Team All-Phillylacrosse.com choice and last summer was honored as a Inside Lacrosse Rising Juniors Young Gun.

Warren, who has represented Philly in the first two Under Armour Underclassmen Games, chose UVA over Princeton, Yale, Penn, Northwestern, Stanford and Dartmouth.

“I know all the schools I looked at had great aspects, and all of them have incredible lacrosse programs,” Warren said. “But UVA just stood out. They have such a sense of community and school spirit and I really feel that I have a strong connection both with the coaches and players.”

Warren admitted that she has thought about Virginia for many years, since her father, Scott, graduated from UVA and played rugby.

“Obviously, there was some influence with dad going to UVA,” she said. “I have been receiving Christmas presents from the UVA bookstore since I was little. I have always had this gut feeling about it.

“I think that the school had the most complete package. They have great academics, and I am interested in studying business. Their McIntire School of Commerce is known as the best undergrad business school in the country.”

Warren had many more accolades last year. She was one of eight finalists for the prestigious Heather Albert Award for the Most Outstanding Player at the US Lacrosse National Championship held in Bel Air, MD, in May (won by Philly 1). She scored over 100 goals as a freshman and also is a varsity soccer and basketball player. Warren plays club lacrosse for the Phantastix.

Warren has had her share of success of the field, too. She has a GPA of over 4.0 and takes all Honors classes. She also participates on the Baldwin Mock Trial team and Model Congress. On weekends she tutors inner-city youths in Bryn Mawr.

Warren, who credits Baldwin coach Kathleen Simone as well as Phantastix coaches Lorraine Beers and JoAnn Yusko for her development, is excited for the starts of the 2010 season.

“It’s definitely tough competing in a league with larger schools, and we lost some strong seniors,” she said. “But we are returning the core of the team and we have a lot of young players that have grown since last year.

“We also have some freshmen and sophomores with a lot of speed and athleticism and we’re hoping to perfect some sticks skills. We set our expectations high and we’re aiming for the Inter-Ac championship.”
