Springfield-Delco senior midfielder Josh Cavanaugh has committed to play Division I lacrosse at the United States Naval Academy.
Cavanaugh was a US Lacrosse All-American last year when he helped the Cougars reach the semifinals of the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) tournament. Cavanaugh scored 39 goals and earned Co-MVP of the Central League while also getting All-Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association and Second Team All-Phillylacrosse.com honors.
Cavanaugh will spend one year at Navy Prep before entering the academy.
“It is a great opportunity,” said Cavanaugh. “My dad always talked to me about it. I have always wanted to be a pilot and I wanted to be thinking ahead in life so I am looking forward to it.
“They also have a good program and they recruited me the heaviest. I loved all the coaches and the kids are cool.”
Cavanaugh, who also was a two-way starter for the Springfield-Delco football team, said he briefly considered Drexel and Duke.
Cavanaugh is one of five Cougar seniors to commit or sign with a Division I college. The others are goalie Austin Kaut and defenseman Brendan Nave (Penn State) and attackman Colin Keegan and long stick midfielder Joe Addona (St. John’s). Junior attackman Joe Venit also has committed to St. John’s. A number of other seniors have either committed to Division II and III colleges or are close to committing.
With the large returning group, Springfield-Delco is confident it can contend for the Central League, District 1 1 and PIAA titles. Of course, it must deal with defending league and district champion Conestoga – ranked eighth in the nation in the first Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Power Rankings – in each case.
“I am so excited; I can’t wait,” Cavanaugh said. “We wanted to go all the way last year and since then we have been working hard. I think the defense will come out stronger.
“We have been working hard on our conditioning; we don’t have as much depth as other teams, so a lot will depend on conditioning and all of our younger guys stepping up. We know what we have to do; we just have to get it done.”
