Men’s college wrap: No. 2 Stevenson routs Widener; Jones (Penncrest) helps Jacksonville stun Denver

Widener hung tough with powerful Stevenson for one period, was then swarmed under by the No. 1 team in the nation today.

The host Pride opened its campaign with a 15-3 loss to the Mustangs, who broke open a 1-1 game by outscoring Widener, 12-1, in the middle periods.

Sophomore Nate Meyer (Jenkintown) tallied five minutes in for the Pride to open the scoring.  But the Mustangs scored the next 12 goals, led by three from Jimmy Dailey.

Dailey ended with four goals, Richie Ford had two to go with three assists and Ray Witte won 14-of-19 face-offs for the Mustangs (1-0), who recorded a 39-24 shots edge.  Geoff Hebert made nine saves.

Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby) and fellow junior Steve Cull (Haverford High) also scored for Widener while senior Dave Simcox (Ridley) had six groundballs and junior Kevin Carney (Ridley) closed with 10 saves.

The contest was played on the campus of Eastern University.

Widener on Saturday hosts No. 4 Salisbury.  Please note the start time has been moved to noon as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team, which will host Immaculata beginning at 3:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Jacksonville 13, Denver 12, 3OT

Dan Jones (Penncrest) had a goal and a groundball as the host Dolphins (1-2) stunned the No. 18 Pioneers (0-2) for their first program victory.

Rutgers 24, Wagner 4

Freshman Cody Isdaner (Episcopal Academy) had a goal and an assist for Wagner in its opener. For Rutgers, freshman Zach Donnelly (Radnor) had two groundballs and freshman brother Joe Donnelly (Radnor) made one save (no goals allowed) in the cage in 12 minutes of action.
