Germantown Friends midfielder Betsy Sachs has committed to play NCAA Division III lacrosse at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME.

Sachs, an Honorable Mention All-Phillylacrosse.com selection last year and two-time All-Friends School League pick, had 59 goals for the Tigers, who repeated as league champion with a 7-0 record and an overall mark of 14-4 overall.

Sachs decided on Bowdoin after two visits, one in the summer and an overnight in the fall. She also considered Middlebury and Amherst. Also a standout ice hockey player who plays for a club team in New Jersey, Sachs may also try to play hockey at Bowdoin but said it may be too difficult because the seasns overlap.

“One of the great things is that it’s a liberal arts school and I can do just about anything,” said Sachs, who is undecided on a major. “I was looking for a school where I could get a great education, first of all.

“That’s a big part of why I go to Germantown Friends, and something I definitely wanted to continue. And I was really looking for somewhere in the Northeast, because I really like the New England area.”

Under eighth-year coach Liz Grote, Bowdoin went 3-6 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference and 8-7 overall last season.

“It wasn’t so much about the program as it was the academics,” Sachs said of her decision. “But when I went up and visited I really liked the coach a lot.”

On the ice, Sachs is a defender and captain for the New Jersey Colonials out of North Jersey, Sachs formerly starred for the Tiger Lilies out of Princeton.

Sachs enters the 2010 lacrosse season as a co-captain for a team that again figures to be a leading contender for a Friends Schools title.

“I am very excited for the season and I am thrilled to be a captain,” she said. “I have always looked up to the seniors on the team and I can’t believe that I finally am one of them!

“I have an idea of the kind of talent we have coming back, but we will certainly have a whole new team and I am excited to see what we can do. I have no doubt that we have a chance at a third consecutive league title. I also want our team to be competitive out of the Friends League, too.”
