Virginia took over the top spot in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches’ Poll for Division I by defeating former No. 1 and defending NCAA champion Syracuse last week.

The Cavaliers (5-0) gained 200 points overall and all 10 first-place votes. They were boosted by strong efforts in the win over the host Orangemen by John Haldy (Haverford School) and Ken Clausen (Hill School). Haldy had the eventual game-winner and Clausen supplied key defense.

Villanova (3-0), which earned an impressive 14-7 win over Penn, remained in the “others receiving votes” category with three other teams.

In Division II, Mercyhurst remained at No. 4 by downing host Wingate, 9-6, as preseason All-American defender Matt Spahr (Penncrest) had three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

In Division III, Cabrini (2-0) remained at No. 5 after crushing former No. 12 Haverford College, 15-3. The Black Squirrels (0-1) are now at No. 18.
