Villanova sophomore long stick midfielder Brian Karalunas was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Drexel freshman goalkeeper Mark Manos (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum, DE) earned Rookie of the Year while Villanova head coach Mike Corrado and Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney shared Co-Coaches of the Year for the Colonial Athletic Association.

Karalunas, the first Villanova player to earn a major conference honor since 2004, is part of a Wildcat defense which ranks among the nation’s Top-5 in scoring defense, allowing just 6.86 goals a game.  The Dewitt, N.Y., native, who leads Villanova in groundballs (60) and caused turnovers (17), leads a Wildcat defense which is tops in the conference in goals-against average (6.71) and penalty-killing percentage (.809, 9-of-47).

Manos had an impressive rookie campaign in goal replacing last season’s CAA Player of the Year in Bruce Bickford.  Manos ranks third in the league with a goals-against average of 8.36 and has a league-best save percentage of .595.  The rookie, who at one point in the season made 10-or-more saves in seven-straight contests, helped the Dragons win their final three conference games of the year to earn a berth in the 2009 CAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships.

Corrado and Tierney each log Coach of the Year honors for the first time in their tenures at Villanova and Hofstra, respectively.  Corrado led a Villanova squad which ranked among the nation’s Top-20 teams on several occasions throughout the season after opening the year with four-straight victories and six wins over its first seven games. His ‘Cats then shocked Hofstra and Towson, the top two seeds, to win the CAA title and earn an NCAA berth.
