The Drexel women’s team opens its season Saturday when it hosts Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.
Drexel coach Anna Marie Vesco led the Dragons to their fifth straight double-digit win total last season as the Dragons went 10-7.
While Drexel graduated its top four point-scorers from last season, the Dragons’ attack returns key players such as juniors Katie Lawson (17 goals), Becca Drylie-Perkins (18 goals) and Mariana Uribe (Notre Dame). Uribe has a knack for coming through in the clutch as two of her five goals were game-winners, including the decider in Drexel’s 10-9 win over George Washington.
Vying for time will be freshmen Jaclyn Klunder (Conestoga) and Ali Allen (Phoenixville).
Senior Kimberly Kabernagel (Conwell-Egan) is a two-year starter at midfield and will provide stability and leadership. One of the Dragons’ top defenders at midfield, Kabernagel caused 14 turnovers while picking up 22 groundballs last season.
Senior Josie Haller and sophomores Sam Berger (CAA’s All-Rookie Team), Allegra Gerhardt and Amanda Gregg (Upper Dublin) also will be keys while freshmen Morgan Holbrook (Bayard Rustin) and Shelby Christopher (Avon Grove) will vie for time.
The defense is promising and is led by sophomores Sarah Bauer (West Chester East), Krista Gerstenberger (Phoenixville), Alexandra Talucci (Notre Dame) and Katie Blazer. Freshman Julia Lanzetta (Ridley) could be a key backup.
Senior goalie Lauren LaBella is a fixture in the cage. She ranks among the best all-time at Drexel in almost all career statistical categories. Her backup, senior Rachael Behrndt (Downingtown East) made 10 solid appearances and posted a 9.12 goals against average.
St. Joe’s women open Sunday at Lehigh at 1 p.m.
The Hawks – who went 7-9 last year – will rely on the offense of junior attacker Jenna Martino (45 goals last year), senior midfielder Abby Renninger (22 goals, Conestoga) and senior midfielder Jessica Westlake (13 goals). Senior Megan Cullinan (West Chester East) and sophomore Christine Readinger (Archbishop Carroll) lead the defense and senior Jontell Lyons (Coatesville) is emerging. Senior Suzy Herlihy (9.46 goals against average) returns in goal.
