Junior Kelly Haggarty (Unionville) erupted for five goals and three assists and freshman Gabby Capuzzi (Archbishop Carroll) added two goals as visiting Ohio State routed American, 17-7, Friday in a non-conference women’s opener.

American scored the first goal with just a minute elapsed in the contest, but a pair of scores by Haggerty started a Buckeye scoring streak that gave Ohio State a 7-2 lead by halftime. Amanda Makoid (Archbishop Wood) had a goal for the Eagles.

Ohio State is coached by Temple grad Sue Stimmel (Boyertown).

Duke 17, Denver 8

Sophomore Emma Hamm (Baldwin School) had a goal and an assist as the No. 3 Blue Devils topped the host and No. 19-ranked Pioneers in a season opener.

Sophomore long stick midfielder Brett Schmidt (Upper Dublin) scored a rare goal as No. 3 Maryland whipped Presbyterian in the opening contest of the Wounded Warrior Project’s “Face Off for a Cause” fundraising event at Ponte Vedra, Fla.
