Recapping accomplishments of Philly H.S. men’s grads that fared well in Division I as freshmen in 2009

    It was a strong year for Philly freshmen in the college ranks. Phillylacrosse.com recaps these freshmen men that played regularly in 2009 at the Division I level.

    Drexel goalie Mark Manos (Salesianum, DE, West Chester) started every game and finished the season with an 8.36 goals against average while earning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Year. Manos, who was also named Second Team All-CAA, led the league in save percentage at .595 and was named the CAA’s Rookie of the Week on four occasions

    Wagner attackman John Hird (Shipley School) had five goals, 17 groundballs and won 32 of 67 face-offs.

    Mt. St. Mary’s attackman Christian Kellett (Malvern Prep) had 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points.

    Penn State attackman/midfielder Matt Mackrides (Malvern Prep) had 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points.

    Penn State attackman Jack Forster (La Salle) had 22 goals and 11 assists for 33 points as a redshirt freshman, but suffered a second torn anterior cruciate ligament at the end of the season.

    Penn State’s Billy Davis (Conestoga) started 10 games at close defense.

    Lehigh’s Blaise Fullen (Penn Charter) had 11 starts at midfield and scooped 15 groundballs.

    Ohio State’s Eddie Bambino (Penn Charter) scored five of 16 games and scored six goals.

    Fairfield’s Chris Creighton (Malvern Prep) had 28 groundballs on defense.

    Fairfield’s Reed Marko (Germantown Academy) had 20 groundballs at midfield.

    Dartmouth defenseman Ben Rossman (Haverford School) started nine games and had 23 groundballs while earning Jewish Sports Review Honorable Mention All-American honors.

    North Carolina’s Chris Layne (Malvern Prep) played 15 games at defensive midfield and scooped 11 groundballs.

    Drexel defenseman Brian Teuber (Penn Charter) started 14 of 15 games and had 13 groundballs while earning a spot on the CAA all-rookie team.

    Penn State midfielder Conrad Ridgway (La Salle) played in 12 games and has two goals and three assists.

    St. Joseph’s midfielder Brendan Burke (Conestoga) had three goals in 11 games.
