Robbie Schwab never had much choice in the matter; since both of his parents are doctors, he was almost willed to pursue the field of medicine.

The Harriton senior middie will be attending Amherst (Mass.) next fall and probably be a pre-med student majoring in some area of sciences. Armed with a 5.0 GPA, Schwab – the Laxzilla/Phillylacrosse.com Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week – said having physicians as role models have helped him succeed in the classroom.

“Both of my parents are doctors, so I was kind of predisposed to that area,” said Schwab, who is a member of the National Honor Society and took nearly all AP and Honors courses. “I knew from the beginning that they expected nothing but the best.”

Fortunately for Schwab, sports have been the perfect buffer. Besides lacrosse, he was a standout on a strong Harriton soccer team.

“I’d say sports focused me and made me more organized,” he said. “I probably do better in the sports season because I structure my day and that makes me finish things off.

“That prevents me from procrastinating.”

Schwab said he chose Amherst for the academic environment and social networking of the western Massachusetts college-town.

“I loved the area,” he said. “And I’m more comfortable in a smaller school. Plus, there are four other schools right in the area.”

Schwab, a member of the Rams’ District 1 Class AA championship soccer team in 2007, also served as Harriton’s lacrosse captain for two years and was an Honorable Mention All-Central league pick this year.

His Rams finished only 1-10 in their first Central League season and went 4-14 overall, but he was satisfied with the team’s performance.

“Obviously, this was the first year for us competing in the Central League and we didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “It was probably our best year. If we were back in the Del-Val, I am very confident we would have (done well).”
