One of Villa Maria Academy’s top goals in 2008 was to avenge its three losses last year to Merion Mercy.

Wednesday the Hurricanes completed a sweep of their regular-season games against the host Bears by claiming a hard-fought 13-11 Catholic Academies League (CAL) victory.

The win moved Villa Maria to 7-0 in the CAL and 9-1 overall. Merion Mercy, which won both regular-season meetings and the league title game over Villa last year, fell to 7-2 in the league and 8-2 overall.

“This is a huge win for us,” said Villa Maria sophomore Chelsea Fay, who contributed four goals.

Merion Mercy had battled back from an 8-4 halftime deficit to tie it, 11-11, on a goal by Theresa Testa with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in the game. But Jordan Christopher tallied the game-winner just 18 seconds later and added an insurance goal with just under two minuets to play.

“One of our biggest goals was to come out this year and fix our weakness from a year ago,” said Hurricanes coach Christa Somits. “We are like a family, we play as a team. There are no individuals.”

Mary Rose Liva and Kathy Young each scored two goals for Villa Maria while Katie Briglia, Maddie Paolantonio and Krystin Mackrides had one each. Liva added two assists while goalie Sarah Radie recorded nine saves.

Kimmy Keating and Paige Matteo each scored three goals for the Bears while Sarah Hospodar and Testa had two goals apiece and Emily Corcoran had one. Casey Rooney had three assists and Erin McKenna notched 14 saves.

Radnor 16, Great Valley 8

Courtney Campbell scored six goals and Gabby Miller added four as the visiting Red Raiders defeated the Patrioits in a battle of two of the top teams in the Phillylacrosse.com Scholastic Girls Top 10 Poll.

Radnor, ranked No. 1, improved to 10-0 while No. 4 Great Valley fell to 8-2.

Beth Ellis and Kelyn Freedman each added two goals for the Raiders while Keelin Hood scored three goals for the Patriots and Emily Ellisen and Colleen O’Malley added two apiece. Katie Geary recorded seven saves for Radnor.

Germantown Fr. 15, Sun Valley 13

Junior Kelly Custer scored seven goals, moving her to 202 for her career for the losing Vanguards (5-4) in the non-league loss to the host Tigers (5-4). Betsy Sachs had five goals and Lydia Kring added four for Germantown Friends.
